The JN0-106 exam leads to the Junos, Associate (JNCIA-Junos) certification. It is designed for networking professionals with beginner-to-intermediate networking knowledge and tests their understanding of core Junos OS functionality. Juniper lists no prerequisite certification. According to the official JNCIA-Junos certification overview, the exam has 65 multiple-choice questions, a 90-minute time limit, and is delivered in English through Pearson VUE. The page lists Junos OS 21.2 as the software version.
What JN0-106 covers
Juniper organizes the objectives into seven areas:
1. Networking Fundamentals: Ethernet, routers and switches, IP addressing, IPv4 and IPv6, subnetting, longest-match routing, CoS, and protocol connection models.
2. Junos OS Fundamentals: Software architecture, control and forwarding planes, the routing engine, the packet-forwarding engine, and traffic processing.
3. User Interfaces: CLI modes and navigation, output filtering, active and candidate configurations, configuration management, and common J-Web functions.
4. Configuration Basics: Initial setup, accounts, authentication, interfaces, configuration groups, logging, archival, and rescue configuration.
5. Operational Monitoring and Maintenance: Show and monitor commands, interface statistics, network tools, software upgrades, and device maintenance.
6. Routing Fundamentals: Routing and forwarding tables, route preference, routing instances, static routing, and the purpose of dynamic routing protocols.
7. Routing Policy and Firewall Filters: Import and export policies, policy terms and actions, firewall filter behavior, and unicast reverse-path-forwarding.
How to prepare
Begin with IP addressing, subnetting, Ethernet, and routing decisions. Then study Junos architecture and spend time understanding the CLI and configuration workflow, especially the difference between active and candidate configurations.
Next, work through initial setup, operational commands, routing, policies, and firewall filters. If you have a Junos lab, use it to inspect configurations and command output. Otherwise, practice explaining what each configuration step or command is intended to do.
Juniper recommends Networking Technology Foundations and Introduction to the Junos Operating System. It also links to practice exams and prep webinars. These resources are optional, and Juniper does not guarantee that using them will result in a pass.
Using JN0-106 practice resources
After a practice set, group incorrect answers by official objective. A subnetting mistake needs a different review session from confusion about configuration rollback or routing policy terms. Record why the correct answer works, revisit the relevant topic, and then try a new set.
Practice questions are useful for finding knowledge gaps, but no single question bank should replace the official syllabus. Third-party resources are study aids, not official exam questions or a promise of a passing result.
JNCIA-Junos provides a foundation for Juniper's Enterprise Routing and Switching and Service Provider Routing and Switching certification tracks. Preparing well means being able to connect networking concepts with how a Junos device is configured, monitored, and used to forward traffic.
